R.E.A.L. Courtice Secondary School, Courtice, Ont.

This powerful group of students are taking their anti-bullying, anti-violence and mental
health message on the road! With over 24 performances and six different shows, REAL
plays out the serious and destructive challenges faced by youth today to elementary
schools, post secondary institutions and at community events. This sought after group
of enthusiast students has partnered with the Durham Regional Police and has also
become part of the academic training at UOIT, Durham College. R.E.A.L.’s
performances provoke thought regarding social issues all while encouraging lively
audience interaction. Known to have the audience on their feet everywhere they go,
R.E.A.L. is impactful, energetic and engaging. We are very proud of your work and
dedication to making a positive difference. Fabulous leadership R.E.A.L!
Ally’s Program, George Webster Elementary School, Toronto, Ont.

These very special young students have won the hearts of many with their Ally’s
initiative. With the focus on reducing bullying and by-standing in their school, these
youngsters and their Ally’s Program is creating a wonderful ripple effect. Peer to peer
impact and anti-bullying workshops have helped this school create a safer
environment for all to live, learn and play. Now more readily accepting responsibility
for themselves and others they have also built on their own increased respect,
responsibility, confidence and leadership qualities. Impressed with their own wave
effect George Webster Elementary Ally’s Group embodies all 3R’s with great pride.

The Me to We Family
Monsignor Percy Johnson Catholic Secondary School, Toronto, Ont.

This high school is “on fire” when it comes to putting the needs of their community
and the world before their own. Their Me to We Family Group has raised over $30,000
during the past four years for those in need both near and far. Living the school motto
of “heart speaks to heart” these hard-working, committed students have developed
partnership with seniors’ programs, local boys and girls clubs, their local police and
the less fortunate children of Ghana. Although many of these students face their own
challenges, they have been able to connect within and around the world. Also proud
recipients of the 2012 TCDSB Exemplary Practice Award, the W.A.V.E. is thrilled to
honor Percy Johnson for their leadership!

This exceptional young man truly exemplifies what WAVE Youth Awards stand for.
Loyal to his street family was once his only hope. Yet, with incredible resilience and
hard work Alex has not only changed his life but is now an empowering leader in his
school and community. Most recently award the 2013 Lieutenant-Governor’s Youth
Medal, Alex proves to all of us, you can triumph over adversity. He is the Director of
Equity for Catholic Students Leadership Impact Team, member of Chaminade Safe
School Action Team and VP student council. Alex is also a strong advocate in
rendering cell phone theft as useless and co-sponsored a petition to the CRTC to
protect all Canadians against cell-phone theft. We are all extremely proud of Alex
and are excited to honor him as our highest ranked Youth Award winner!
Lily Wang Rick Hansen Secondary School, Mississauga, Ont.

Lily is one special young lady! A strong role model to all her peers and staff, she is
making a difference in her school and community. A mentor to future students with
special needs, Lily eases their transition to high school. She is diligent at promoting
safety and advocated for simple yet critical changes to make her school more
accessible for all students. She promotes the culture of sensitivity and caring.
Described as an outstanding role model, Lily is a member of the Special Education
team and the Cross Roads Youth Academy as well as a other school committees. Her
resolve and determination to overcome constant struggles AND make a positive
difference makes Lily a wonderful Youth Award Winner. Congratulations Lily, you are
so deserving of this award!
